H&B; DV 808 CodeFree DVD Player
Written by: Ed Brantley, DVDBuyingGuide.com

The H&B; DV 808 is a middle of the road, well rounded DVD player. The price is definitely attractive on this player and there are many other desirable features on it also. It's sleek, silver chassis would make an excellent addition to any home theater system. It's a very solid player as evidenced by the tray and how firm it is. Not flimsy like some of the players I have used. The player easy enough for just about anyone to use and there are many fun features to get into once you are comfortable with all of the basics.

The H&B; DV 808 is a region free player and so therefore it plays discs from regions 1-6. The player also has a built in NTSC/PAL converter, so you can purchase PAL discs from abroad and play them on a standard NTSC TV. This is an important feature because 99% of the TV's manufactured in the US use the NTSC format. To find out what kind of TV you have, just look in the instruction manual of your TV. The player is dual voltage for both the USA and Europe/Asia, so if you travel across the world quite a bit this player could be the one for you. The H&B; DV 808 also has the capability of playing the newly encoded REA and RCE discs meant to discourage people from playing region 1 discs on a region free player. Many of the new movies coming out now have this coding, such as Spiderman. This is done to prevent piracy as different movies are released in different regions at different times. The player selects the regions automatically and there are no cumbersome codes to enter in before a disc can be played. This is good news for those that are not as electronically inclined. When it came to playing my discs from other regions, there were no problems whatsoever. I tried out many different discs from other regions such as a region two copy of Jurassic Park and viewed a nice smooth picture on the majority of my viewings. I was very happy with the playback and picture quality of the H&B; DV 808. The H&B; DV 808 does lack the progressive scan feature that I have become accustomed to in my higher end home theater type viewing, but still gives a great picture nonetheless.

The remote control on the H&B; DV 808 is outstanding. It really stands out when it comes to remotes I have used in the past. It is one of the thinnest remotes I've used with a DVD player, and it's very lightweight. It's got 47 buttons on it so it allows for plenty of controllability you would expect out of a command center. It is also laid out very simply and easy to navigate around. The remote supports the multi angle feature for discs recorder with multiple camera angles. The zoom feature is also operated from the remote and offers clear images when zooming in. The set up menu is also operated from the remote and it is very user friendly and easy to navigate around. Instead of having to go into the set up menu for the subtitle and language set up, you can take care of it with a push of the button from the remote. The skip forward/backward function worked well and it was easy to stop the motion whenever I was ready.

I have a lot of music on CD-R's and CD-RW's that I have burned from various sources and I didn't have any problems playing a wide range of discs. I was happy with that because those have been know to be a bit picky at times with certain players. Music sounds good on regular audio CD's and the player also has built in MP3 decoding, which I really liked. The quality audio DAC and built-in Dolby Digital Decoding gives all the options you need for Dolby soundtracks on DVD.

The player comes with the standard outputs included on most DVD players these days. It has the component video output, which is the most desirable way to hook up your DVD player. If your player has limited component inputs, you also have the option of utilizing the S-video output as well. There is also a composite video output for more versatility. For the audiophiles there are optical and coaxial outputs.
